Scene 2: Supports during pregnancy
One weekend after the Chinese New Year, Jiao Niang
meets her sister-in-law, A Xi, and Ru Xiang at a Vietnamese
restaurant run by Hong Lai for lunch. As they chat, Ru Xiang talks to
A Xi about their business stall, and then Jiao Niang admires how her
brother and sister-in-law manage their busy business and raise two
children. A Xi takes the opportunity to ask Jiao Niang if she and Jun Rong are
planning to have children. Jiao Niang explains that while they both love children,
she has concerns because she is far from home and unfamiliar with Taiwan's
healthcare system. A Xi encourages Jiao Niang with her own experience and
shares many details about Taiwan's medical insurance system and policies. Hong
Lai, holding a plate of Vietnamese spring rolls, joins the conversation as there
are fewer customers.
After listening to A Xi, Jiao Niang mentions that raising a child is also expensive
and she doesn't have a job at the moment. They rely on Jun Rong for all their
income. Hong Lai chimes in, saying that local governments provide family
incentives, and if Jiao Niang gets a job and have national health insurance, there
are subsidies for parents who have a child under the national pension scheme. A
Xi adds that there are also subsidies for childcare and kindergarten. Ru Xiang
chips in that care for pregnant women and children is much better now
compared to 20 years ago when she came to Taiwan. They all encourage
Jiao Niang not to be worried about all that and speak up if she has any
problems or needs help. They'll help her brainstorm solutions
together. Jiao Niang eats her pho while listening to everyone
and feel really reassured by the support of so many
“sisters”.
