Scene 3: Empathetic communication and
collaborative support
Jun Rong enters the room and sees Jiao Niang. There's still a
hint of awkwardness between them due to their earlier argument, and
Jun Rong is unsure of how to approach the situation. To his surprise,
Jiao Niang speaks up first. She acknowledges that she understands it's not
easy to bring her mother all the way from Indonesia, but she was hurt by Jun
Rong's immediate rejection. She explains that she often feels unwell as she's
pregnant and needs his understanding. As Jun Rong listens to Jiao Niang, he
realizes he hadn't considered her perspective and is genuinely sorry. Jiao
Niang assures him that she knows he cares about her deeply, but sometimes
she just doesn't know how to respond because of her own struggles. Jun
Rong expresses his understanding and promises to make an effort to see
things from Jiao Niang's point of view.
Once they've opened up about the reasons behind their argument, Jiao Niang
shares an incident from her outing earlier in the day. She bumped into a
friend who misunderstood her accidental injury as domestic violence. She
reminds Jiao Niang that it's important to protect yourself and get help if
anyone every mistreats you. Jun Rong adds that people also need to
care about their emotional wellbeing, and he reassures Jiao Niang
that he's always there to listen if she needs to talk. Jun Rong
says that he'll go with Jiao Niang for her pre-natal
check-ups. They exchange smiles and feel good
about their relationship again.
