Scene 2: Difficulties soothing the baby, and
physical and mental struggles
Ru Xiang, who works as a healthcare interpreter for new immi-
grants at the health center, visits Jiao Niang. Jiao Niang shares her
recent experience with Ru Xiang. She talks about the challenges of
being a new mother and feeling overwhelmed with taking care of the baby.
She also mentions that she's having a hard time adjusting to the postpartum
customs and food prepared by her mother-in-law, which she is not accus-
tomed to. As she speaks, tears start rolling down her cheeks.
Ru Xiang pats Jiao Niang shoulder and assures her she's not alone. She has
also gone through a similar experience. She explains that after giving birth,
it's common for women to feel sensitive, have heightened emotions, and
experience physical discomfort. She reassures Jiao Niang that during
postnatal check-ups at the hospital, doctors and nurses inquire about
these feelings and provide advice. Healthcare interpreters at the
health center also care about the wellbeing of new mothers. Ru
Xiang shares that she gradually recovered by seeking support
and guidance. After hearing Ru Xiang's comforting
words, Jiao Niang nods and says she'll look
after herself more as well.
Scene 3: Teamwork and striding towards a bright future
As Ru Xiang leaves, she runs into Jun Rong. Jun Rong expresses his
commitment to be more understanding and attentive to his wife's needs.
It's now after the baby’s one-month mark. Jiao Niang calls Ru Xiang to share
that she is feeling better. She mentions that her concerns about taking care
of the baby and adapting to postpartum dietary restrictions have been
resolved with understanding, empathy, and effective communication with her
family. She also expresses her gratitude for the support from her family,
sisters, and local resources available to her. Jiao Niang believes that
by working together, her and Jun Rong will continue to improve
in their parenting journey.
