Unit 6: Big challenges

Scene 1: Unexpected premature birth, and
                            the empowerment of health education

Jiao Niang is nine months pregnant. One sunny afternoon, while
taking a walk near her home, she almost fell. When she got home, her
mother-in-law informed her that Jun Rong mentioned he would be
working late and wouldn't be home for dinner. Jiao Niang then starts
feeling discomfort and tightness in her stomach. She tries contacting Jun
Rong but he doesn't answer the phone. Eventually, her nervous moth-
            er-in-law, father-in-law, older brother in-law, and sister-in-law accompany
her to the hospital, where she safely gives birth to a son named Xiao Long.
A few days later, Jiao Niang and Jun Rong are participating in a maternal
care program. A senior nurse has taught them about postnatal care and
shared some important information. The nurse first addressed changes in
postnatal life, the discomfort that comes with taking care of a baby and
potential postpartum depression. She encouraged everyone to have open
discussions and assign household chores, childcare, and emotional
support to the mother. They were also taught how to bathe the
baby and change diapers. The entire family worked hard to
learn how to care for the newborn together.
