Unit 5: Antenatal depression
Scene 1: Unexplained anxiety and
strain on relationships
Jiao Niang is pregnant, and is feeling dizzy and uncomfortable at
home. She feels low with no reason. She tries to shake off the negative
feelings, but to no avail. Jun Rong notices she is unhappy and tries to
cheer her up, but she only feels irritated and restless. Jun Rong thinks he's
just not trying hard enough. He tries even harder but this only fuels Jiao
Niang's anger. Eventually, Jiao Niang suggests having her mother visit to
help with postpartum recovery, but Jun Rong disagrees. He believes that his
mother and sister-in-law are enough to help and doesn't see the need to
trouble his mother-in-law to come all the way to Taiwan. This differ-
ence of opinion leads to an argument, leaving Jiao Niang feeling
misunderstood and angry. She storms out, leaving Jun Rong
behind, wanting to show care but unsure of what to
do next.
Scene 2: Reminders from siblings and reflective learning
Jun Rong is deep in thought, contemplating his actions, when his
elder brother, Jun Feng, and sister-in-law, A Xi, enter the room. Jun
Feng notices Jun Rong's troubled expression and asks him what's bother-
ing him. Jun Rong opens up about his desire to care for Jiao Niang but he
feels like everything he does only makes her angry. Jun Feng and A Xi
immediately share their experiences and insights on nurturing and commu-
nicating with their own spouses. A Xi reminds Jun Rong that pregnancy
customs can vary in different countries, and he should be understanding
towards his wife, who is far from her hometown. Jun Rong listens
attentively to his elder brother and sister-in-law's advice,
reflecting on what they've shared.
