Unit 8: When children start school,
parents keep each other company
Scene 1: Holding hands and walking together
as a couple
Time flies, and Xiao Long is about to start elementary school. Jiao Niang
and Jun Rong have also begun making preparations for Xiao Long's enrollment.
In addition to getting school supplies and helping Xiao Long adjust to school life,
checking homework and signing communication books are new challenges that
the couple are now facing. They have already had initial discussions and divided
up the tasks. For instance, even though Jiao Niang has studied Chinese, there
may still be uncertainties regarding of the accuracy of Xiao Long's homework.
So they decided that Jun Rong will be responsible for checking Xiao
Long’s assignments.
Scene 2: Challenges in parent-teacher
communications
After sticking to their assigned roles for some time, the couple finds
that when Jun Rong is busy with work, checking Xiao Long's homework
every day is a burden for him. Jun Rong also sees that Jiao Niang lacks
confidence and is hesitant to check Xiao Long's homework. He suggests that
Jiao Niang look over the homework first, then Jun Rong can double-check it when
he returns home so they're helping each other out and both sharing their joint
concern for their child's learning.
One day, Xiao Long brings home a notice about a parent-teacher meeting, but Jun
Rong has to travel out of town on that day. Jiao Niang volunteers to attend the
meeting alone. At the meeting, although Xiao Long's teacher is friendly, Jiao
Niang struggles to fully understand due to the pace of the speech.Fortunately,
in one-on-one conversations, she manages to grasp Xiao Long's school
situation. When she gets home, Jun Rong learns that Jiao Niang didn't
fully understand what the teacher had said and comforts her,
saying that it's alright. He takes the initiative to call the
teacher to get the full information.
