Scene 3: Joining the volunteer team
for cultural exchanges
After speaking with the teacher over the phone, Jun Rong learns that
the school is recruiting volunteers to tell stories. Jiao Niang sees this as
an opportunity to improve her Chinese language skills and accompany Xiao
Long, so she asks Jun Rong to express her interest in becoming a storytelling
volunteer.
Successfully becoming a storytelling volunteer at the school, Jiao Niang visits Xiao
Long's class every Tuesday and Thursday during the morning reading session to
tell stories. During discussions with the teacher about the storytelling topics, Jiao
Niang mentions her status as a new immigrant. There are language courses for
new immigrants at the school. She expresses her eagerness to share Indonesian
fairy tales with the children during storytelling sessions, hoping to introduce
Indonesian culture to a wider audience. Jiao Niang feels anxious and worried
about being accepted when presenting this idea to the teacher. However,
to her surprise, the teacher's eyes light up when they hear her idea,
and she enthusiastically accepts. The teacher encourages Jiao
Niang to share more Indonesian stories with the children.
Scene 4: Making improvements by accompanying and
developing abilities through joyful learning
Since Jiao Niang became a school volunteer, not only has her Chinese
proficiency improved, but she has also become more comfortable engaging in
casual conversations with other parents during drop-off and pick-up times. Jiao
Niang is delighted that she can discuss parenting issues with Jun Rong. From Xiao
Long's enrollment in elementary school until now, they have been adjusting their
parenting approach almost every week. They proactively address challenges
and work together to find solutions. Jiao Niang is grateful to have Jun
Rong as an amazing partner, and she believes that together they can
overcome anything.
