Unit 2: I'm not alone
Scene 1: When you're ill
After settling down in Taiwan, Jiao Niang is trying her best
to adapt to the pace of life there. One of the first challenges she
encounters is adjusting to the vastly different climate from her home
country. One day, while Jiao Niang is buying groceries at the market, she
encounters Ru Xiang. Ru Xiang notices that Jiao Niang seems to have a cold
and asks if she has seen a doctor. Jiao Niang replies that her husband, Jun
Rong, is currently away on business, and she doesn't know what to do or how
to go about seeing a doctor. Being new to Taiwan and unable to communicate
well in the local language, she doesn't want to trouble others. So, she planned to
wait for Jun Rong to return and then ask him to take her to the doctor.
When Ru Xiang hears this, she tells her about the available support options. She
tells Jiao Niang that if she has any everyday things like this, she can dial the
toll-free number 1990 (Life Advisory Service Hotline for Foreigners in Taiwan).
There will be Indonesian-speaking staff available to help. Jiao Niang can also
ask other things about life in Taiwan through this helpline. Ru Xiang also
mentions the "New Immigrants' Empowerment Development Information
Network" website. Jiao Niang can access online courses prepared by the
Taiwanese government specifically for new immigrants. If she can't find
the answers to her questions online, she can send an email and
someone will respond in Indonesian to clarify any doubts. Jiao
Niang is relieved and very grateful for this information, and has
expressed her intention to make good use of these
resources.
